What Is A Blusher?

Most wedding veils feature a single layer of fabric that trails behind your wedding dress. A “blusher” is a special second layer of fabric that is included in the design of the veil. This second layer is shorter and traditionally meant to drape over your face when you walk down the aisle. It is then “lifted” before the ceremony officially begins.

The History Of The Blusher Veil

Blusher wedding veils have a traditional, vintage inspired elegance. This is largely because they were a staple in weddings that took place during antient times.

Ancient people were pretty superstitious, so they believed that covering a bride’s face when she walked down the aisle would protect her from any evil spirits that might be hanging around the wedding. (Bridesmaids also used to wear matching dresses to confuse these evil spirits, but that is a story for a different day…)

In the age of arranged marriages, blushers were also used to cover the bride's face to prevent the groom from seeing her before saying their vows.

Today, blusher veils are simply a fun accessory that offer a romantic nod to the past. Some brides have always pictured themselves walking down the aisle wearing a traditional blusher veil over their faces. While they are perhaps not as common as they once were, they are still a popular accessory for brides in the 2020s and plenty of brides are wearing them in 2025.

When Does The Blusher Get Lifted?

Traditionally, the bride wears the blusher over her face while walking down the aisle and her father lifts the veil from her face when she reaches the alter. Brides may also opt for their partner or Maid of Honor lift the veil instead.

There is no right or wrong way to wear a veil with a blusher – just be sure to figure out at the wedding rehearsal who will be lifting your blusher for you and when.

Do I Have To Wear A Blusher Over My Face?

Although blushers are traditionally meant to be worn over your face when walking down the aisle, it’s definitely not a requirement. Plenty of brides opt for double layer wedding veils purely for the extra volume and visual impact they provide.

Can Every Veil Come With A Blusher?

No, not every veil can or should come with a blusher. The fabric and design of a wedding veil doesn’t always lend itself to having a second layer of fabric. When in doubt, you can always contact us to see if a blusher can be added.

Some Things To Consider When Wearing A Blusher Veil…

Fabric is Key

If you want to wear a blusher wedding veil, consider the practicality of the veil you are selecting. Most blusher veils are made from sheer tulle (rather than lace or heavily embellished fabric) because you want the part that drapes over your face to be soft and lightweight. Plus, wearing a patterned fabric over your face makes it difficult for you to see where you’re going.

Think About Photos

Blusher veils offer a unique photo opportunity. Drape your blusher over you and your partner during your portraits for a chic couple’s portrait.
